The Lemon Project Reflection
On reflection I believe that my project was a success. I gained a substantial number of followers using hashtags and by liking and following other accounts who subsequently followed me back - overall gaining 365 followers.
Instagram users genuinely seemed to enjoy my content and interacted with posts regularly, either leaving a comment or simply liking a new post. I used captions to my advantage attempting to be relatable to current affairs in politics with a light-hearted spin. This worked well as most individuals are in-tune with important government decisions regarding Brexit and the pandemic, which meant they understood my references. Providing a lighter tone, likely helped to battle the spread of negativity on social media, which may be another reason I gained so many followers.
Making politicians into their fruit counterparts added humour without being mean-spirited. Making Boris a lemon fits with his personality and people’s views, Dominic was a chilli, as he brought pain to the party while Kier was a lime the opposition to a lemon. This is metaphorical in the sense that the house of commons (house of lemmons) is sour and being run by a lemon.
My highest liked (40 likes) and interacted with post, has a caption that relates more to general life while the visual is more political. The post details, Boris (a lemon) looking out of the window of 10 downing street saying, “Farewell my right honourable friend” while Dominic Cummings (a chilli) is leaving. The caption states, “Sometimes you have to say farewell to the bad influences in your life.” This caption has no relation to politics and could be a factor into why this post was so successful.
I really enjoyed creating this content as this has been a way to diffuse my negative emotions about the government and pandemic. On reflection, I didn’t post as regularly as I would have liked. I wanted to post daily and began scheduling posts on later.com daily at 6pm to have a backlog. However due to upcoming deadlines and work commitments sometimes I wasn’t able to find the time to create content. If I did have spare time, I would struggle to think of new content as it had to be relatable to current news or Boris, within a fruit theme. As all my posts were digital collages, it would be simple to re-create content, but new content would become time-consuming. Practising my graphic design skills using Photoshop tutorials, may have aided the creation of innovative content, which is something to consider in future.
I decided to create my account on Instagram, as I thought the visual aspect would shine and already had a following on my personal account. However, to gain more followers, I could have advertised my account on multiple platforms, or tested other platforms such as Twitter as this has a higher chance of becoming viral. Many famous individuals use Twitter regularly and if noticed my account may have potentially gained a huge amount of followers. Additionally, paid advertising may have helped grow my account, however I did not have a budget for this purpose.
To conclude I enjoyed this project as it has taught me how to promote content and advertise myself on social media.
