Platform Considerations

During today's introductory lecture, we briefly touched on the Degree Project assignment which got me thinking more in-depth about my final major project. While on placement, there was a large amount of discussion among my peers about our return to University. Hearing other student's ideas resulted in me starting my own thought process into which type of platform or device(s) I wanted to focus on creating for.

Originally, I was considering building an app which would include user research, prototyping and a coded creation. Although this would be an interesting project, this isn't an area I have much knowledge about. I have previous experience creating app mock-ups using myBalsamiq and prototypes using Invision however I have never coded an app before let alone published one. This gap of knowledge may hinder the development of the application and result in an incomplete project.

Therefore I'm leaning towards a web design and development project instead. As I have already have a strong background in coding and previous experience creating websites this may be the best option for my degree project. In second year, for my independent project, I re-designed and coded a beskpoke website for Ramsay Safety Solutions Limited.

(Gattuso, 2020).

This project was successful and was awarded 82% for this module. Throughout the summer, I continued to aid the company further to introduce their new COVID-19 services.

(Ramsay Safety Solutions Limited, 2020).

Furthermore while on placement, my role as a Design intern included tasks that were web design related. Being an artworker across 23 international markets for Disney's website, has given me more knowledge in user experience design. I am more aware of accessibility, placement/positioning and colour matching which will be beneficial when creating a website for my degree project.

As I'm interested in completing a Masters in Web Design & Content Planning at the University of Greenwich, it would be useful to have a well-constructed website for my postgaduate application and portfolio. However, I am not disregarding designing a mobile application completely as this still would be a great portfolio piece. Instead, I would focus more on the User Experience design than the app's development.
