Today's Digital Media Example

My favourite Digital Media Example that I discovered today was a non-linear interactive storytelling piece used to promote Kontra K's song, 'An deiner Seite' which translates to 'By your Side' or 'Next to You'. This is a clever marketing tool and is really interesting for the audience to learn more about the witch hunter story.

I really enjoyed seeing the difference in contrast and especially the way the same type of shots were used when moving between the past and present.






When playing through this multiple times, I realised that there are different endings depending on how many pieces of evidence you collect.
  • When collecting no evidence, the fisherman rows away in his boat. #fisherman
  • When collecting some of the evidence, the fisherman feels sorry for the women and touches her. #mysteryhunter
  • When collecting all of the evidence the fisherman shoots and kills the witch. #witchhunter

How can you explain the style / tone / emotions?
This piece is quite edgy, gritty and dramatic.

How cohesive is the combination of elements (colours / materials / words / imagery / sound)?
  • The music dampens when you are viewing a scene from the past.
  • The hue of the past scenes have a more blue tone compared to the present.
  • Words aren't needed as the imagery tells the story, words are only used when evidence has been collected.
Who is the main audience? (secondary audience?)
  1. Fans of Kontra K
  2. Indviduals new to Kontra K's music
Is the user experience exciting & engaging? (how?)
The video is definitely engaging and interactive - the song fits well with the variety of camera shots.

What qualities (above) could you incorporate in your work?
If I decide to usee video in my degree project, this has taught me that a variety of camera shots are really important.

Handmaids Tale Experimentation

As this is a ballet adaptation, I thought perhaps I could use ballet shoes as a motif. I'm going to try to avoid making this look cliché. If this doesn't work, I may play around with the additional photograph that Dean provided us with. I purchased a pair of used old pointe shoes on a reselling app named, 'Depop' and once arrived asked my boyfriend to hold the ribbons of the ballet shoes in different positions. At first I noticed that the natural lighting was extremely dark and dull. Being a complete amateur at photography, logically I needed another light source so decided to use a smartphone camera flashlight to provide this.  We tried the lighting from different angles until we had the flashlight almost face-on to the ballet shoes. This reminded me of being in front of a spotlight at the theatre and created some amazing natural shadows. Showreel

Using Adobe Premiere Pro, I cut both visual and audio elements together to suit the length of the showreel. As the video shouldn't be anymore than a minute, I decided to keep to this timeframe. This was  actually helpful as it forced me to keep projects that looked impressive or I was most proud of. I've happy with my showreel as I feel that there isn't any filler and I managed to add quite a lot of movement considering some of my work are stills/print based. After completing my showreel, I uploaded this to YouTube where I featured this on my channel. This means that my showreel will be the fist video that potential subscribers/employers will see. I decided to use a song named, Shelter by Porter Robinson & Madeon. With permission from Dean, we were allowed to use a published song or soundtrack.
