Dark (on Netflix)

Recently I have finished watching a German TV Show on Netflix using English Subtitles on Netflix.

As spoken previously in Dean’s lecture, he showed us advertisements and videos with twists. These ‘ah’ moments are the very feeling you get when watching Dark. As the name suggests, the premise is very dark whereby characters are attempting to prevent an apocalypse from destroying their world. You have an underlying feeling of hope for each character but every episode gives the audience plenty of twists, turns and cliffhangers to keep you on your toes.

This TV show is extremely difficult to explain and the family tree is unimaginable but this is expected from a show about time travel and different dimensions. Eventually, all of your questions are answered.

(Secrets, n.d.)

There is a character named, 'Helge' who appears emotionally unstable and is possibly suffering from dementia. You notice that he has an ear injury however at that moment his character isn't the focus of the story so you assume that he had an accident or this was a birth defect. Soon after the head of police's (Ulrich's) son has gone missing and is linked to Helge having some involvement in his disappearance. Ulrich learns how to time travel and attempts to kill young Helge to prevent his son from disappearing, he is unsuccessful and only manages to bludgeon his ear (and potentially caused him some brain damage in the process). It was really interesting to learn the backstory of this character as he is quite mysterious up until this point.

A character named, "Charlotte" has never known her real parents and was raised by H.G. Tannhaus. It is explained that two women delivered Charlotte to Tannhaus - who he named after his granddaughter that died in car accident. We discover that Charlotte's daughter Elizabeth survived the apocalypse and in the future has a child with Noah (a time traveller). Elizabeth's daughter is then kidnapped and brought to Tannhaus to raise who becomes Charlotte. The 'ah' moment is when we discover that this is a loop whereby Charlotte is Elizabeth's mother and daughter and Elizabeth is Charlotte's mother and daughter.

Among these twists, the most signature twists include:
  • The villain (Adam) is the protagonist (Jonas) in the future.
  • Ulrich's brother Mads disappeared in 1986 and his corpse was found in 2019 almost perfectly preserved.
  • The missing boy (Ulrich's son Mikkel) is the protagonist's (Jonas's) father Micheal.
I found every aspect of this show impressive mainly including the storyline and camera shots. They not only flowed but were experimental and interesting. A small snippet of this can be found in the opening title sequence of the show.
