Branding & Advertising
In today's Professional Practices lecture we covered the difference between thinking laterally and logically when designing creatively. Thinking laterally doesn't come naturally to me, I would consider myself a logical thinker so this lecture really challenged me to think differently.
The main examples used were in video production, graphic design, advertising and in branding. The branding examples really made me think about how to use these design concepts to create a logo for myself and potentially my degree project.
Out of curiosity, I took one of the concepts and attempted to think, 'outside the box' while designing a logo using a randomly generated word. As thinking laterally takes time and practice, I thought this would be a great exercise to get me started.

Farewell
While driving back home, I noticed a bus stop advertisement for Extra gum and thought I would take a picture. I really like this ad because it's quite simple. When you have bad breath you attempt to 'mask' it with minty gum however because of coronavirus, most people are already wearing an actual mask. It's almost like the brand saying, we know what's underneath your mask and you still need gum.
Quite cheeky, I like it.
The advert itself uses a blue background with white copy which is synonymous with the brand.
An example of a not so good advertisement that I witnessed while waiting for the shuttle bus was this poster advertising local eyelash extensions for £20. Personally, I wouldn't trust anyone with my eyeballs if I saw this ad because it just seems very untrustworthy. I'm unsure whether it's the Graphic Design or the fact that the ad had been rained on but honestly, I feel this ad would be damaging to a person's business. As the audience, I feel that not much thought or care has been put into this ad which makes you wonder if you'll receive customer service in the same manner.
